Dungeons and Dragons’ litany of modules and rulebooks have given players a plethora of new ways to experience the game. Between the popularity of Dungeons and Dragons web series like Critical Role inspiring its own official Wildemount setting and the prevalence of homebrew within the Dungeons and Dragons player base adapting popular franchises like Destiny and Final Fantasy 14, the tabletop RPG has seen plenty of unique and game-changing additions. Now, Dungeons and Dragons’ newest adventure in Dragonlance will look to bring a new spin on the classic formula.

During Wizards of the Coast’s D&D Direct presentation, the Dungeons and Dragons developers officially revealed the new expansion is coming in two separate parts with distinct purposes. Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen will bring a new adventure for Dungeons and Dragons fans telling a brand-new story of the Dragonlance universe’s “War of the Lance,” while Warriors of Krynn is said to introduce a “war game” experience to D&D featuring large-scale military battles, akin to games like Warhammer 40K. No official release date was given for the book and war game, instead, a vague “Late 2022” window was provided.

While Wizards of the Coast has revealed little about the story of the expansion or details on the gameplay for Warriors of Krynn, the new expansions will add to an already bountiful line-up of new additions set to hit the game soon. The previously announced Monsters of the Multiverse is set to release next month, adding a slew of playable monster races like goblins and Lizardfolk to the game, and Critical Role recently released its newest official module in Call of the Netherdeep.

The release of Dragonlance will come at a time when Dungeons and Dragons has been riding a wave of popularity in online spaces. The massive success of Critical Role has introduced even more new players to the long-running RPG as well as enticed other groups to start similar live play series like G4’s Invitation to Party. Dragonlance’s introduction of war game-inspired mechanics to D&D’s time-tested formula and the return to one of the game’s classic realms should provide another unique way for fans to experience the iconic role-playing franchise.
